Erwin-Schrödinger Award for Specifically Designed Petri Dishes for three KIT scientists

Three KIT scientists - Prof. Martin Bastmeyer, Prof. Christopher Barner-Kowollik and Prof. Martin Wegener - received the award worth EUR 50,000 for their interdisciplinary research on three-dimensional cell culturing.
Prof. Christopher Barner-Kowollik

3D-printing is a worldwide trend which finds increasing application in a range of fields such as toys and automobile industry. In the micro- and nano- range, 3D printing can now be applied towards the artificial synthesis of biological tissue, i.e. Tissue Engineering, as shown by the work of the three KIT researchers which have developed 3D designed petri dishes for the cultivation of cells. The three KIT scientists collaboratively developed flexible, three-dimentional micro scaffolds in which cell cultures can be grown and studied in a tailor-made environment. This achievement is honored by the award of the “Erwin-Schrödinger-Preis” of the” Helmholtz-Gemeinschaft Deutscher Forschungszentren”.

Erwin-Schrödinger-Preis

Since 1999, the award honors scientists, who collaborate with scientists in medicine, science and engineering outside their own discipline and together achieved excellent scientific or technical innovative performance. The prize which is endowed by EUR 50.000 was presented on September 22nd, 2016 during the annual meeting of the “Helmholtz-Gemeinschaft Deutscher Forschungszentren”.
